DEBCAR UPDATE # 10

Published February 20, 2005 / Covering September 10 to 19, 2004

To refresh your memory, at the end of our last update I had wrapped up my on-site simulator work in Thousand Oaks, and we were looking forward to hitting the road again.  This update covers our first few weeks of adventure following a long summer spent living and working in a parking lot.  But before diving into these stories, I'll quickly mention a significant change to the DEBCAR presentation format.

This update still consists of several "magazine style" story pages for you to read, each with our signature blend of rambling prose, informative (often wacky) hyperlinks, and a smattering of small clickable pictures.

What's new is a "slideshow" at the bottom of each story.  Think of this as our way of sitting down with you and showing you our travel pictures.  Compared to the story thumbnails, these are almost like real prints -- big enough and clear enough to actually see details in.  And each picture has a note below it describing what you're looking at.

The slideshows cover a wider range of the things we see and do than the story pages.  So for the full DEBCAR experience, we recommend that you read each story and watch its slideshow before proceeding to the next story.  When you finish each slideshow, click the X to close that window, and you'll return back to the DEBCAR window where you left off, ready to move on to the next story.  Here's what you can do in slideshow mode:

- To manually advance from one picture to the next:

Press the left or right arrow keys, or mouse click the left or right side of the picture.

- To make the pictures automatically advance like a real slide show:

Press the S key, or mouse click the "slideshow" icon with red dots on it.

- To view a "modem friendly" page of thumbnails showing all the slides and captions at once:

Press the PgUp key, or mouse click the "up" icon.

- To toggle your browser's full-screen mode to help see pictures and captions without having to scroll:

        Press the F11 key.

Okay, now that you're fully briefed, here are this edition's stories and slideshows:

Windsurfing and Cryptosporidiosis at Lake Lopez

    Bunny Hopping to Pismo

    Hangin' Out at Hearst's House

    Dessert, Anyone?  Cherries in Monterey

Day Trippin' Down the Coast to Big Sur

Day Trippin' Up the Coast to Santa Cruz and San Jose

Note that we're making a quick trip to New York (by aeroplane, how exciting!) to see a bit of orange fabric and to visit some friends, after which we'll be back in Austin for a little while to install solar panels on the RV and attend my high school reunion.  After that we'll probably head down to the coast for a bit of Spring windsurfing.

See y'all later!

- Carey
